Bucks Get Shootout Win Over Bees
Nov. 11, 2009- LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 3-2 in a shootout Wednesday night at the Laredo Entertainment Center. The Bucks won their third straight game to improve to 6-2-2 (14 points), and move three points behind Odessa for first in the Southern Conference.
Mike Looby picked up the game-winning goal in the shootout, while J.P Levassuer set aside 22 of 24 shots, including four of five in the shootout. Levassuer has not lost in regulation this season as he improves to 5-0-1.
With the win Terry Ruskowski passes Gary Unger for fifth place all-time in CHL history with 293 victories.
The Bucks would jump out in front of the Bees just 2:09 into the first period when they caught a break. Maxime Lincourt’s centering pass would go off of a Killer Bees defender and into the back of the net to give Laredo a 1-0 lead. The tally was Lincourt’s fourth of the year, and his second in as many games.
The Killer Bees would tie the game at 1-1, 9:14 into the first when Jesse Bennefield scored off of a snap shot from the high slot. The goal was Bennefield’s third of the season.
Laredo was outshot in the first period 13-11.
Neither team was able to light the lamp in the second period, keeping te score tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.
The Bucks had several scoring chances in the second period as they outshot the Killer Bees 11-2.
Justin Styffe put Laredo up 2-1 with 6:10 left in the third period when he scored a shorthanded breakaway goal. Styffe picked up his second goal of the year.
Bennefield would tie the game at 2-2 just 18 seconds later when he struck on the power-play from the high slot. Bennefield now has four goals on the season.
Neither team scored in overtime as the Bucks outshot the Bees 7-3.
Going back to last season, seven of the Bucks last nine home games (including playoffs) have gone to overtime in a shootout. The Bucks are 2-3-2 in those games (0-3 in the playoffs).
Laredo outshot Rio for the game 40-24.
Andy Franck stopped 37 of 39 shots in net for the Killer Bees, who fall to 5-3-1 (11 points).
The game started about 45 minutes late due to the Killer Bees bus breaking down on the way to Laredo.
